President Dr.Mokgweetsi Masisi says the launch of the Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) Service in Botswana dubbed Upic will help create job opportunities in the country.
Speaking at the launch of Upic television in Gaborone last night, President Masisi said the project will unlock employment opportunities for nothing less than five thousand eight-hundred and forty (5840) Batswana by its third year of operation and many more through the hospitality, transport and tourism sectors.
He said initiative headed by Botswana Fibre Networks will help Botswana to transform and diversify her economy through Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), in line with National Long Term Vision 2036, which puts emphasis on leveraging on ICT as a key contributor to economic growth and employment.
President Masisi said the launch marked a significant milestone in Botswana’s Digital transformational Agenda that aims, to pursue a digitally inclusive nation through the arts and creative industry.
“We made a promise to nurture the creative economy to make it a source of economic growth, job creation, innovation and trade, as well as, to expose our arts and culture to international markets. I am therefore, pleased to note that the launch of this IPTV is yet another milestone in the fulfilment of these promises," He said.
President Masisi further emphasized the need for all to work together, in promoting Botswana s creative and arts industry, in the development of ICT in pursuit of the diversification of our economy. He urged stakeholders in the ICT industry to work together for the success of the project and support BOFINET.
