OUT announces 5-day Tanzanian Sign Language Training to boost inclusion

THE Open University of Tanzania, through its Open University Consultancy Bureau, will host a 5-day beginner course in Tanzanian Sign Language aimed at promoting inclusive service delivery and community engagement.
The training, set for 10th to 14th August,2026 at OUT Headquarters in Kinondoni, Dar es Salaam, is open to adults 18+ with basic Swahili or English literacy.

It targets teachers,healthcare workers, government staff, students, family members of deaf persons, and community leaders across Dar es Salaam,Arusha, Dodoma and beyond.

Participants will learn the TSL alphabet, at least 100 common words, basic grammar, and conversational skills for real-life settings like markets and clinics. The course also covers Deaf etiquette and cultural sensitivity.

The program will be facilitated by experienced sign language instructors from OUT and the University of Dar es Salaam, including Dr. Elizabeth Kyara, Mr. Daudi Gamba and Ms.Theresia Mbogo.

The course fee is TZS 600,000 or USD 250 per participant, covering training, stationery, meals, refreshments and a certificate of attendance.
