The Mozambican minister of health revealed on Wednesday that at least 54 healthcare professionals were dismissed last year for malpractice in the sector and promised a “tough stance” and “zero tolerance,” warning that there would be «no mercy» for such offences.
“We will be relentless on this issue. We will take a hard line. And when this issue of poor care, illegal charges and theft of medicines is identified, there will be no mercy. Zero tolerance,” said Ussene Isse during the 51st Health Co-ordinating Council, which is taking place in the city of Beira, in Sofala province, central Mozambique.
The minister considered that such behaviour, practised by a minority, damages the reputation of the thousands of professionals working in the sector, arguing that the response must involve strengthening accountability, ethics and the quality of care provided to the public.
