Excellence in Journalism Awards nominees announced

ARUSHA-A total of 91 journalists have been nominated out of 728 journalists who submitted their work for the Excellence in Journalism Awards Tanzanian (EJAT) 2022 competition. Among them, 36 journalists are from newspapers, 27 from online media, 15 from radio while 13 are from television

The announcement of nominees took place on June 23, 2023 at a press conference held by the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) at the Diplomat Hotel in Arusha.

A panel of seven judges drawn from the media and academia adjudicated the entries. Legendary Mkumbwa Asaad Ally, former Daily News Managing Editor, chaired the panel.

The other judges were Mwanzo Lawrence Millinga, Peter Wallace Nyanje, Mbaraka Abdi Islam, Dr. Egbert Emmanuel Mkoko, Rose Haji Mwalimu, and Nasima Haji Chum.

Among the journalists selected, 44 are women where 16 are from newspapers, 12 from online media, six from radio while 10 are television journalists. The nominated men are 47, of which 20 write for newspapers, 10 are radio journalists and seven television reporters. Another ten write for online media.

In EJAT 2020, a total of 59 journalists were nominated while for EJAT 2021, 60 journalists reached this stage.

This will be the 14th edition of the annual Awards which were launched in 2009, and have continued non-stop.

At the gala night of this year, retired Chief Justice Mohamed Chande Othman is expected to be the Guest of Honour. The gala will be held in Dar es Salaam, at Mlimani City Hall, on July 22, 2023. The winners will be announced at the gala.

The members of the EJAT Organizing Committee are the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) which is the Chairman, others are the Tanzania Media Foundation (TMF), Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA-Tan), Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF), Tanzania Women Journalists Association (TAMWA), HakiElimu, and SIKIKA.
