Tanzania’s ICT Minister meets ITU Secretary-General ahead of WSIS+20 High-Level Event

GENEVA-Hon. Jerry William Silaa , Minister for Communication and Information Technology of the United Republic of Tanzania, held a bilateral meeting with Ms. Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), ahead of the WSIS+20 High-Level Event 2025.
Hon. Silaa reaffirmed Tanzania’s strong commitment to the ITU and emphasized the country’s growing involvement in its initiatives. He underscored the importance of continued ITU support in expanding digital access, particularly in underserved and remote areas.

The Minister is in Geneva to represent Her Excellency Dr.Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania in the WSIS+20 High-Level Event, taking place from 7 to 11 July 2025 at Palexpo.
The event is co-hosted by the ITU and the Swiss Confederation, with support from UNESCO, UNDP, UNCTAD, and other UN agencies. It gathers global stakeholders to assess WSIS progress and advance digital cooperation.

Tanzania views WSIS as a vital platform for aligning its national digital priorities with global best practices.

The country’s initiatives-such as Jamii Namba (digital ID), Jamii Malipo (e-payments), and Jamii Hub (interoperability framework) reflect core WSIS Action Lines focused on access, inclusion, innovation, and e-government.
Tanzania seeks to position these as scalable models for other developing nations through continued collaboration with ITU and WSIS partners.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to building a more inclusive, secure, and resilient digital future.
