The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) on Monday terminated contracts of seven senior officials, who had in February been sent on forced leave.
The terminations mark the latest chapter in a turbulent transition period for the electricity distributor, which assumed control of the country’s power distribution network from Umeme in April 2025.

The seven officials had earlier been interdicted at a time when the Ministry of Energy suspended managing director Paul Mwesigwa and sacked board chairperson Lydia Ochieng-Obbo.

The fate of Mwesigwa, sources within UEDCL, who asked to remain anonymous because they are not authorized to speak to the media, remains unclear.

The affected include Justine Nakagiri Ssemwanga, Head of Internal Audit; Boniface Barongo, Head of Human Resources and Administration; Beatrice Tumuheirwe, Manager-HR Business Partner; Jonan Kiiza, Head of Corporate and Stakeholder Affairs; Protaze Tibyakinura, Chief Engineering and Technical Services Officer; Barbrah Kyomuhendo, Head of Technology and Applications; and Geoffrey Musafu, Manager of Applications.

Sources familiar with the matter said the managers were informed that their contracts would not be renewed beyond June 30.

Sources at the Ministry of Energy confirmed the termination but referred CEO East Africa Magazine to UEDCL.

“Well, I can’t confirm [but] what I know is that the Acting MD dismissed the team. Please talk to UEDCL for further information. The acting spokesperson is Stephen Ilongole,” an Energy Ministry source said.
