ARUSHA- The United Republic of Tanzania, through the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), is hosting the Third Lead Author Meeting (LAM3) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group I (WGI), from 2–6 November 2026 at the PAPU International Conference Centre in Arusha.
The meeting brings together approximately 300 leading climate scientists and report authors from across the world to advance the preparation of the Working Group I contribution to the IPCC Seventh Assessment Report (AR7), which focuses on the physical science basis of climate change.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, Director General of TMA and Vice-Chair of the IPCC, highlighted the significance of Tanzania hosting this important international scientific gathering, noting that it provides an opportunity to strengthen international scientific collaboration and showcase Africa's growing contribution to global climate research and assessments.
The five-day meeting will focus on reviewing newly published scientific literature, addressing outstanding scientific issues, refining scientific findings, figures and graphics, and improving consistency across report chapters.
Participants will also consider comments received during the First Order Draft review, which closed on 2 October 2026, and further develop chapter drafts for the next stage of the IPCC review process.
The official opening ceremony will take place on Monday, 2 November 2026, with the Prime Minister of the United Republic of Tanzania, Hon. Dr. Mwigulu Lameck Nchemba (MP), expected to serve as Guest of Honour.
As part of the meeting, an IPCC Working Group I outreach event will be held on 4 November 2026 at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) and the Institute of Accountancy Arusha (IAA).
The event aims to raise awareness of the IPCC process and encourage scientists, experts and practitioners working on climate-related issues to actively participate in the Seventh Assessment cycle and beyond.
Hosting LAM3 reinforces Tanzania's commitment to advancing climate science, strengthening international cooperation and supporting the use of credible scientific information to inform climate-related policies and decisions.
The meeting is organised by the IPCC, through its Working Group I Technical Support Unit (TSU), in collaboration with the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA), on behalf of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.
