Pelosi statement commemorating the Armenian Genocide

Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement marking 106 years since the beginning of the Armenian Genocide:
“Today marks 106 years since the beginning of one of the worst atrocities of the 20th century: the systematic murder of more than 1.5 million Armenian men, women and children by the Ottoman Empire. On April 24, and every day, we remember the victims and survivors who endured nearly incomprehensible suffering and pledge to honor their lives by recognizing this brutality for what it was: genocide. But tragically, the truth of these heinous crimes has too often been denied, its monstrosity minimized.

“That is why our hearts are full of joy that President Biden has taken the historic step of joining Congress with formal recognition on Armenian Genocide Day. This landmark action follows Congress’s 2019 resolution declaring that the barbarism committed against the Armenian people was a genocide. We salute Congresswoman Anna Eshoo, Chairman Adam Schiff, Chairman Frank Pallone, Congresswoman Jackie Speier and generations of courageous Armenians who made this day possible because they refused to accept the shameful denial of the truth.

“History teaches us that if we ignore its darkest chapters, we are destined to witness the horrors of the past be repeated. To commemorate this solemn day of remembrance, let us pledge to always stand strong against hatred and violence wherever we see it and recommit to building a future of hope, peace and freedom for all the world’s children.”
