How TGC is transforming AICC and KIA into global platforms for showcasing Tanzania’s gemstones

ARUSHA-In an era where nations compete to define themselves through the quality of their resources and the creativity with which they present them, Tanzania has taken a distinctive and strategic step forward.
Through the Tanzania Gemmological Centre (TGC), the country has successfully transformed the Arusha International Conference Centre (AICC) and the Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) into global showcases that reflect the prestige, wealth, and creativity of Tanzania’s gemstone resources.

Through the establishment of modern retail outlets for value-added gemstones, TGC has done more than create points of sale; it has built international platforms for telling Tanzania’s story, spaces where visitors encounter the true essence of the country, not through words alone, but through visible, tangible excellence.

These outlets are strategically located in areas that receive thousands of international and domestic visitors each year, including delegates to global conferences, tourists, investors, and travellers from across the world.
Here, the journey of Tanzanian gemstones is presented in practice, from the earth itself, through gemmological education and technology, to contemporary jewellery designed to meet internationally accepted market standards.

Visitors arriving through AICC or KIA are now offered a unique opportunity to acquire authentic Tanzanian gemstones such as tanzanite and other precious stones, not as raw materials, but as finished products rich in craftsmanship, storytelling, and Tanzanian expertise.

Speaking on the vision behind the initiative, the Coordinator of TGC, Engineer Ally Maganga, noted that the establishment of these outlets goes beyond commercial objectives; it forms part of a broader national strategy to use the mining sector as a tool for development and economic diplomacy.

“These outlets are a bridge connecting visitors with Tanzania’s identity. Every gemstone sold carries Tanzanian creativity, professional expertise, and the story of our natural resources. This is how Tanzania presents itself to the world through action,” said Engineer Maganga.

On a day-to-day basis, this narrative is reinforced by customer response. Edward, one of the sales attendants at the TGC outlets, explains that many visitors are initially drawn by the visual appeal of the products before becoming more deeply engaged by the story behind each gemstone.
"Most visitors stop because of the beauty of the products. But their appreciation grows when they learn that these gemstones are crafted right here in Tanzania. Many purchase them as souvenirs of their journey or as meaningful and distinctive gifts,” Edward explained.

Visitors from Europe, Asia, the Americas, and various African countries have expressed satisfaction not only with the quality of the gemstones, but also with the professional explanations provided regarding their origin, type, value, and uniqueness.

This experience enhances trust while building a positive image of Tanzania as a country that understands the value of its resources and knows how to present them to the world.

Through this initiative, TGC continues to establish itself as a leading institution in implementing Tanzania’s national gemstone value-addition strategy.

At the same time, the program contributes to job creation for young professionals skilled in gemmology, jewellery design, and specialized services, while positioning Tanzania as a global hub for rare gemstones.

Indeed, the TGC outlets at AICC and KIA are not merely shopping spaces; they are platforms of national storytelling-places where gemstones become narratives, and where Tanzania presents itself to the world with pride, creativity, and genuine value.

In Tanzania’s journey toward building a strong and sustainable gemstone industry, young Tanzanians remain a central pillar and a strategic workforce essential to the success of value addition.

Their involvement in gemstone cutting, polishing, jewellery design, valuation, and marketing gives the sector a renewed professional and sustainable character, while providing skilled, dignified, and long-term employment opportunities.

Through the Tanzania Gemmological Centre (TGC), young people gain access to education and specialized training in gemmology, jewellery design, valuation, and quality certification aligned with internationally recognized standards.

This empowers them to become full participants in the gemstone value chain rather than passive observers of their natural heritage.

As a result, mineral resources are transformed from purely geological assets into a foundation of knowledge, innovation, and opportunity for present and future generations.

Strengthening Training and Technology Transfer through International Cooperation

At the same time, the Government of Tanzania, through the Ministry of Minerals, has continued to strengthen the quality of professional training for local experts by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Tanzania Gemmological Centre (TGC) and Sunset Gem Company of Thailand.
This partnership marks a new chapter in technology transfer and international expertise in gemstone cutting, polishing, and identification.

The collaboration aims to equip Tanzanian institutions and professionals with advanced value-addition technologies, promote the exchange of experience, and elevate training standards to meet global market requirements.

Furthermore, the Government’s initiative to construct a modern eight-storey building in Arusha for TGC demonstrates a strong commitment to transforming Tanzania into a national and regional hub for education, trade, and innovation in the gemstone sector, while reinforcing the role of Tanzanian youth as key drivers of the industry both domestically and internationally.
