DAR-At just 39 years old, Professor Martin Chegere, a Senior Lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), has become one of Tanzania's youngest academics to attain the rank of Associate Professor.
According to a statement issued by UDSM on June 25, 2026, the University's Council approved his promotion on June 24, 2026, elevating him from Senior Lecturer to Associate Professor.
The promotion followed a rigorous academic assessment in which he scored an impressive 8.39 points, reflecting outstanding performance in teaching, research, and scholarly publications.
Professor Chegere is an economist in UDSM's School of Economics, specializing in applied and development economics. His research focuses on food and nutrition economics, agricultural development, behavioural economics, poverty reduction, impact evaluation, natural resource management, and policies aimed at improving children's education and health outcomes.
Since June 2023, he has served as the Head of the Department of Applied Economics at UDSM.
Throughout his academic career, Professor Chegere has secured research grants from internationally renowned organizations, including the European Union (EU), SIDA, NORAD, DANIDA, IDRC, FCDO (formerly DFID), and the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC).
He has also served as a consultant for the World Bank, various government ministries, and several research institutions. In addition, he has successfully supervised PhD candidates and made significant contributions to policy-oriented research that supports Tanzania's socio-economic development.
