On the State Visit of Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania to the Kingdom of Norway

1. At the invitation of H.M. King Harald and H.M. Queen Sonja of the Kingdom of Norway, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, paid an official state visit to Norway from 13 – 14 February 2024.
H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan was accompanied by a high-level delegation including five ministers, senior government officials as well as members of the Tanzania Business Community.

2. The visit marks 60 years of bilateral relations between the Tanzania and Norway and demonstrates the enduring commitment of both sides to advance and diversify their long-term friendship and cooperation.

3. Sixty years of shared history have forged strong bonds between our countries and peoples. Today, the main areas of cooperation are renewable energy, climate, agriculture, social security, and public financial management. The collaboration includes Government institutions, universities, NGOs and private sector in both countries.

4. H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan and H.E. Prime Minister Støre agreed to continue to strengthen the bilateral relations, with particular attention to promoting trade and business cooperation, and welcomed the holding of the Tanzania-Norway Business Forum, which took place on the occasion of the state visit.

The Parties expressed common interest in harnessing the potential for green energy transition and engaging the private sector in energy investments.

5. The Leaders confirmed a shared commitment to the multilateral system and respect for international law.

They expressed their concern about the current geopolitical situation, with increased tension and conflict, and its impact on global supply chains and commodity prices, with grave consequences for developing countries.

H.E. Prime Minister Støre commended Tanzania’s important contribution to peace and stability in Africa.

6. Climate change represents an urgent and potentially irreversible threat to human societies and the planet. Both Parties recognized the value of the bilateral Climate Partnership agreement, signed in September 2023.

7. 2024 also marks the 50th anniversary for bilateral collaboration on agriculture, contributing to Tanzania’s national policies to transform and modernize the agricultural sector.

The visit saw the signing of a bilateral Memorandum of understanding (MoU) on food security and agriculture, testifying to the joint resolve to strengthen Tanzania’s capacity and ability to transform the agri-food sector.

8. On concluding the meeting, H.E. President Samia Suluhu Hassan and H.E. Prime Minister Støre expressed their satisfaction with the state of the bilateral relations while expressing their hope that the state visit will pave the way for even closer ties between Tanzania and Norway in the years to come.
