About TFRA

Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority (TFRA) was established by an Act of Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania (The Fertilizer Act No. 9 of 2009).

TFRA was officiated in May 2012 with the purpose of regulating the manufacturing, importation, marketing and use of fertilizer in the country.

The broad thrust of the act is to ensure that the fertilizers that farmers in Tanzania acquire for use meet the required standards.

The motives for the establishment of TFRA include protecting the farming community and the general public against health hazards associated with the use of fertilizers and fraud in marketing.

The Fertilizer Act No. 9 of 2009, establishes the Tanzania Fertilizer Regulatory Authority as a body corporate mandated to regulate the manufacturing, importation and use of and trade in fertilizers, or fertilizer supplements, e.g. growth stimulators and regulators and similar products. The Act also provides for fertilizer quality control.

The mandate among others involves the performance of the following activities:

a)Register all fertilizer and fertilizer supplements dealers and their premises;

b)License fertilizer dealers;

c)Issue permits for importation and exportation of fertilizer and fertilizers supplements; and

d)Implement policies, strategies, and programs relating to fertilizer industry development.
