AU sounds alarm over Venezuela unrest

BY DIRAMAKINI

THE African Union (AU) has expressed grave concern over the recent developments in Venezuela, including reports of President Nicolás Maduro's abduction and military attacks on Venezuelan institutions.
This screengrab taken from the X account of Rapid Response 47, an official White House account, shows Nicolas Maduro being perp walked by agents inside the US DEA office in Manhattan on January 3, 2026.

In a communiqué, the AU reaffirmed its commitment to international law principles, including respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right to self-determination.

The AU emphasized the importance of dialogue and peaceful dispute resolution, stressing that Venezuela's challenges can only be addressed through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans.

The AU expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people and called on all parties to exercise restraint and respect for international law to prevent escalation and preserve regional peace and stability.
