LONDON-The United Republic of Tanzania participated in the 72nd Meeting of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) held in London on March 7th,2026, under the Chairmanship of H.E. Dr Ian Borg, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism of Malta.
The Tanzanian delegation was led by Hon. Prof. Palamagamba J. Kabudi (MP), Minister of State in the President’s Office (Special Duties), who briefed member states on the Government’s response to the events of 29 October 2025 and the reforms currently underway.
During the meeting, Tanzania highlighted progress being made under the leadership of H.E. Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, guided by the national framework of Repair-Rebuild-Renew, aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, promoting national reconciliation and reinforcing public confidence in governance.
Minister Kabudi informed CMAG of the work of the Independent Commission of Inquiry chaired by Chief Justice (Rtd.) Chande Othman, as well as preparations for the establishment of a National Reconciliation Commission to support dialogue, healing and national cohesion.
Tanzania also reaffirmed its readiness to facilitate the visit of the Commonwealth Secretary-General’s Special Envoy as part of continued engagement with Commonwealth mechanisms.
CMAG welcomed Tanzania’s engagement and encouraged continued progress on the reform measures outlined during the meeting, reiterating the importance of democratic governance, the rule of law and adherence to the Commonwealth Charter.
Speaking after the meeting, Hon. Prof. Palamagamba J. Kabudi stated: “The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania remains firmly committed to the principles and values of the Commonwealth Charter. The reforms underway reflect our determination to strengthen democratic institutions, promote national reconciliation and safeguard our country’s longstanding tradition of peace and stability.”The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) is the Commonwealth’s principal mechanism mandated to address adherence to the political values and principles of the Commonwealth Charter, and to support member states in upholding the Commonwealth’s shared commitments to democratic governance, the rule of law and respect for human rights.
Tanzania reaffirmed its commitment to continued constructive engagement with the Commonwealth Secretariat and fellow member states as it advances its reform and reconciliation process.
