The project, called Sila Atlantik, intends to construct two high-voltage transmission lines that will connect Germany and Morocco, making it the longest international underwater electrical cable in the world.
It is designed to provide up to 5% of Germany's yearly power needs using renewable energy.To power the network, project developers intend to deploy about 15 gigawatts of solar and wind power in Morocco.
The proposal is one of the most ambitious cross-border renewable energy projects ever conceived, since the two underwater cables would extend almost 4,800 kilometers beneath the Atlantic Ocean.
The development coincides with European countries' efforts to improve energy security, diversify electricity sources, and expedite the shift away from fossil fuels by increasing cross-border power integration.
Following the failure of the proposed Xlinks Morocco-UK renewable electricity initiative to proceed last year, Sila Atlantik was established.
However, due to unresolved discussions between Berlin and Rabat, the German venture's progress has halted.
