PRESIDENT of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has emphasized that Tanzanians need peace, security and stability rather than political unrest and confrontation, noting that a peaceful environment is essential for the Government to continue delivering quality social services, promoting economic growth and creating employment opportunities.
President Dr.Samia made the remarks on today July 9,2026 during the signing ceremony of the Joint Political Reconciliation Declaration between the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) and ACT-Wazalendo at the State House in Zanzibar.

Addressing political leaders, government officials, religious leaders, diplomats and other invited guests, President Dr.Samia said political reconciliation should never be viewed as a sign of weakness, but rather as a demonstration of political maturity and a commitment to placing national interests above political differences.

She said the agreement marks the beginning of a new chapter in strengthening national unity, mutual respect and cooperation among political stakeholders, while encouraging a political culture founded on constructive dialogue, respect and civility instead of hatred, division and unnecessary confrontation.
"Tanzanians need peace, security and stability. These are the conditions that enable the Government to continue improving social services, expanding the economy and creating more employment opportunities for our people,"President Dr.Samia said.

She added that political conflicts and divisive politics slow down development efforts, whereas reconciliation and respectful political engagement create a conducive environment for implementing development programmes and improving the welfare of citizens.

President Dr.Samia urged all parties involved in the reconciliation process to honour the commitments they have made, continue engaging in open dialogue and strengthen mutual trust in order to safeguard national unity, peace and security.

Concluding her address, the President called on leaders and citizens alike to preserve the spirit of reconciliation that has been achieved.
"Let the wisdom we have demonstrated today be protected through tomorrow's good deeds, and let the trust we have built over time not be destroyed by unproductive words or actions," she said.

Speaking at the ceremony, the President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, said the Joint Declaration between CCM and ACT-Wazalendo paves the way for the implementation of the Government of National Unity while strengthening peace, unity, solidarity and sustainable development in Zanzibar.

Dr.Mwinyi said the agreement reflects the determination of political leaders to place the interests of the nation above partisan considerations, adding that the Government will continue working with all stakeholders to ensure the reconciliation process promotes lasting peace, good governance and sustainable development.
He further noted that the agreement creates an important opportunity to resolve longstanding political differences through dialogue and consensus, thereby reinforcing Zanzibar's democratic governance and social cohesion.

Meanwhile, ACT-Wazalendo National Chairman Othman Masoud Othman commended President Mwinyi for advancing the reconciliation process, describing it as a significant step toward finding a lasting solution to Zanzibar's long-standing political challenges.

The ceremony was attended by Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel John Nchimbi, former Presidents of Zanzibar Dr. Amani Abeid Karume and Dr. Ali Mohamed Shein, Second Vice President of Zanzibar Hemed Suleiman Abdulla, leaders of political parties, religious leaders, senior officials from both the Union Government and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, heads of security organs, ambassadors, representatives of international organizations and members of the public.

The political reconciliation agreement is widely viewed as a landmark initiative aimed at strengthening national cohesion, preserving peace and creating a stable political environment that will support Zanzibar's and Tanzania's long-term social and economic development.
