President Dr.Mwinyi to represent President Dr. Samia at NAM 65th Anniversary Summit in Serbia

PRESIDENT of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, H.E. Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, will travel to Belgrade, Serbia, to represent the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, at a high-level commemorative meeting marking 65 years since the first Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

This is according to a statement issued today, August 29, 2026 by Raqey Mohamed, Director of Presidential Communications (Ag.).

The commemorative events, scheduled for 31 August to 01 September 2026 at the Palace of Serbia in Belgrade, will bring together participating delegations to reflect on the history and legacy of the Movement and the continued relevance of its principles in today's political and economic environment. Tanzania is also expected to deliver its national statement during the meeting.

The first NAM Conference was held in Belgrade in 1961, laying the foundation for the Movement. In the years that followed, the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere emerged as one of its prominent voices, making a significant contribution to advancing its principles and objectives, particularly in championing national independence, self-determination, equality, peace, solidarity and international cooperation. 

NAM has since remained an important platform for cooperation among Member States and with other nations.

As part of his programme in Belgrade, President Dr. Mwinyi is expected to hold bilateral talks with the President of the Republic of Serbia, H.E. Aleksandar Vučić, during which he will deliver a Message from the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E. Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The meeting between the two leaders is expected to provide an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations and cooperation between Tanzania and Serbia, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, agriculture, tourism and the Blue Economy, as well as other areas of mutual interest.

President Mwinyi is also expected to engage with Serbian investors as Tanzania seeks to broaden commercial ties and promote new opportunities for trade and investment cooperation with Serbia.

The President's visit to Serbia is expected to conclude on 02 September 2026, following the commemorative meeting and other engagements scheduled on the margins of the commemorative event.
