Former guerrillas of the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) who oppose the leadership of Ossufo Momade again promised action today to “rescue” the party, warning that the convening of the National Council is a strategy by the current leader to avoid stepping down.

“We would like to reaffirm, before the media and the Mozambican people, that we will do everything to rescue our Renamo from the grip of the Ossufista regime and return it to the party’s members and the population in general, with our eyes on the upcoming elections,” said João Machava, spokesperson for the former guerrillas.

At a press conference in Maputo to announce the so-called second coordination meeting bringing together the self-proclaimed national management committee of the party, to be held on 12 and 13 September, the representative of the guerrillas said the convening of Renamo’s National Council was yet another strategy by Ossufo Momade to avoid leaving the leadership.

“We are watching the manoeuvres of the party leadership and will not sit idly by. The meeting we are convening will take measures appropriate and proportionate to the situation,” João Machava promised.
