THE Bank of Tanzania (BoT) has officially approved the change of name of Habib African Bank Limited to Africa & Gulf Bank (Tanzania) Limited, following changes in the bank’s shareholding structure.
According to a public notice issued by the central bank on June 2, 2026, the name change became effective on May 19, 2026, after all regulatory and legal requirements were fulfilled.
The notice, signed by the Deputy Governor responsible for Financial Sector Stability and Supervision, Sauda K. Msemo, stated that the rebranding follows changes in the ownership of shares in the bank, leading to the adoption of a new corporate identity.
Despite the change in name, the bank’s headquarters will remain at its current location on Plots No. 813/23 and 814/23, situated at the junction of Zanaki Street and Indira Gandhi Street in the heart of Dar es Salaam.
Financial sector experts note that bank rebranding and name changes often reflect shifts in ownership, strategic business direction, or expansion plans aimed at strengthening market presence and attracting new investment opportunities.
Such changes generally do not affect the continuity of services provided to customers unless otherwise communicated by the institution.
The development adds to a growing trend of strategic restructuring within Tanzania’s banking industry, as financial institutions continue to adapt to evolving market conditions and increased investment interest from both local and international stakeholders.
