Kenyan police have arrested a man in Nairobi after intercepting a dismantled drone and accessories at a cargo company in Eastleigh, with investigators saying the shipment was allegedly destined for Somalia.
Police arrested Mohamud Hared on Friday after he arrived at the cargo company to collect a parcel reportedly sent from China by a person identified as Abdi Kafi.
According to a police report, the company became suspicious after noticing that the package was tightly wrapped and that its contents had not been declared by the sender.
Hared reportedly paid for the shipment through M-Pesa and asked company employees to open the package. Inside, they found a dismantled unmanned aerial vehicle, or drone, along with several accessories.
The company alerted police, who arrived at the scene and arrested Hared before taking him to Pangani Police Station for questioning.
Police said Hared told investigators that the drone was destined for Balad Hawo, a town on the Kenya-Somalia border, and was expected to be transported through Mandera. It was allegedly to be collected by Yussuf Abdi Abdille, a resident of the border area.
Hared remained in police custody as investigations continued into the shipment, its intended recipient and its possible use.
Kenyan authorities have increased efforts to prevent the illicit importation and movement of equipment that could potentially be used in attacks or other criminal activities, particularly in areas near the Somalia border.
Police have not said whether the suspected shipment was linked to any militant group or planned attack.(Hiraan)
